During the Syrian Coalition delegation’s visit to New York, Vice-President Hisham Marwah, political committee member Fouad Aliko, and Syrian Coalition member Alia Mansour held a joint meeting with the Special Representative of the Secretary General for Children and Armed Conflict Ms. Leila Zerrougui and Syrian Network for Human Rights representative Abdul Fadel Ghani to discuss the specific threats to the security of children in Syria.
In particular, they emphasized the Free Syrian Army’s (FSA) commitment to ending and preventing the recruitment of children under the age of 18. They also stress that the Syrian Coalition and its moderate counterparts in the Free Syrian Army take this issue very seriously.
The delegates stressed that the best way to protect Syrian children is to stop the barrel bombs that are the chief killer in Syria, the primary cause of displacement, and the main radicalizing factor in Syria. They expressed that it is their hope that the SRSG will support the Syrian people’s efforts to demand a no-fly zone is Syria to protect children and all others.
Vice-President Hisham Marwah political committee member Fouad Aliko attended a ministerial level event on “Human Rights, Peace, Security and the Role of the Security Council” hosted by German Foreign Minister Steinmeir and Jordanian Foreign Minister Judeh.
During the commentary section of the event, Vice-President Marwah reiterated the Syrian Coalition’s call to refer the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court. Accountability for the crimes committed against the Syrian people is a priority for the Syrian National Coalition but it is also the responsibility of the international community and the Security Council.
