A delegation from the Syrian National Coalition met Robert Rohde, Germany’s Ambassador for the Negotiations on Syria and Head of Syria, Iraq, Lebanon & Anti ISIS Strategy Division at the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin on Monday. The visit came as part of the international campaign being carried out by the Coalition to mobilize support for Idlib and bring an end to the Assad regime’s and Russia’s onslaught on the region.
The delegation comprised Secretary-General Abdel Baset Abdel Latif and Coordinator of the Department of External Relations Abdulahad Astepho. They highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Syria, particularly in Idlib and southwestern rural Aleppo resulting from the Assad regime and its allies’ relentless bombardment and shelling. They also stressed the urgent need for collective action to address the humanitarian crisis by taking immediate measures to provide humanitarian assistance and meet the basic and urgent needs, especially shelter and healthcare services.
The delegation stressed the need for friendly states to assume their role in putting an end to military operations, protecting civilians, stopping the mass displacement of civilians, and providing unfettered, urgent humanitarian aid to those in need.
The delegation called on the German side to seek further coordination and cooperation with the Coalition and its institutions in order to confront the challenges at all levels, especially with regard to supporting stability and preserving the sovereignty of Syria and its territorial integrity. They stressed the need for calling on all the concerned parties to engage responsibly to reach an inclusive politician solution through the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
The delegation also met representatives of civil society organizations and the Syrian community in Germany with whom they discussed the latest political and on the ground developments as well as ways to activate the work of the community and unify efforts to serve the Syrian community in Germany.
