Mohammad Khair Al-Wazir, member of the Syrian Coalition, praises the unification of the military command in Eastern Ghouta, describing it as “a positive move even though it came a bit late. The Syrian Coalition fully supports this move, which came after extensive study and several previous attempts that failed because of the conflicting and varying agendas of the supporters.” Al-Wazir praised the goals behind the unification of the military leadership, most importantly toppling the Assad regime, breaking the siege on Eastern Ghouta, supporting the judiciary to curb corruption and holding wrongdoers to account. The statement that followed the unification should not be understood as a move towards the division of Syria, but as an invitation to preserve the integrity of Syrian territory and the unity of the Syrian people. The position of the military leadership of any possible political solution to the crisis was clearly expressed in the statement of the unification, that a peaceful solution must guarantee the departure of the Assad regime and hold it to account.
