Syrian Coalition Urges Int’l Community to Stop Assad’s Policies of Mass Displacement

Secretary-General of the Syrian Coalition Abdul Ilah Alfahd called upon the international community to take concrete, urgent action to put an end to the Assad regime’s policy of mass forced displacement of civilians in Syria. Alfahd warned that this policy is aimed at bringing about a demographic change in many parts across Syria, most notably in the Damascus suburbs and in Homs.

In an article in Al-Qabas newspaper on Thursday under the headline: “The international community does not hear, see or speak,” Alfahd called for ensuring the right of Syrians to stay in their homes by forcing the Assad regime to stop its brutal attacks on civilians and to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians trapped in besieged areas.

Alfahd said that over 75,000 civilians trapped in the district of Alwaer in Homs live in tragic conditions as a result of the blockade regime forces have imposed on the district for nearly three years. Despite the siege and bombardment by banned weapons, residents of Alwaer have shown firm determination to stay in their homes, he added.

The United Nations delivered only little relief aid to Alwaer, Alfahd said. He pointed out that the UN is a partner with the Assad regime in this policy as the UN head office in Damascus oversaw the signing of a truce agreement between the Assad regime and Alwaer residents that was in favor of the regime and served its plans to empty the district of its residents.

Alfahd warned that the Assad regime plans to carry on with its enforced displacement of Syrian civilians, a policy for which it is willing to use every means at its disposal. He said the so-called local truces the Assad regime imposed on a number of rebel-held areas violate international law and represent a stain on the international community. These so-called truces, whose terms were dictated by the regime, are primarily aimed at forcing residents of these areas to surrender and eventually leave their homes.

Alfahd called on the international community to take concrete steps to lay the groundwork for a political solution that puts an end to the suffering of the Syrian people and achieve their aspirations. The Syrian people will continue the struggle for a decent, free life, Alfahd stressed, adding that the unholy alliance of Assad, Iran and Russia will fail to break the will of the Syrian people.

Alfahd warned that the regime’s policies and violations, together with the lukewarm response by the international community, will have dire consequences, especially on the political process in Syria. (Source: Syrian Coalition)

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people’s unity within the same Syrian soil
is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its
symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes
against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
