The Syrian Coalition welcomes the statements made during the informal session of the UN General Assembly to discuss the humanitarian situation in Syria, which focused on the size of the suffering imposed by the Assad regime on the Syrian people. The statements stress the importance of implementing UN Security Council resolution for the Introduction of humanitarian aid. The Syrian Coalition points out that “we look with great interest to the calls of the United Nations High Commissioner Navi Pillay to the Security Council to refer the Syrian crisis to the International Criminal Court, especially in light of repeated violations of human rights and the report that details the torture of 11,000 detainees in Assad’s prisons.” The Syrian Coalition slams the comments made by the Ambassador of the Assad regime to the United Nations, Bashar Jaafari, describing his comments as “detached from reality, and proves the regime’s evasion of the UN Security Council No. 2139 and its insistence on blocking humanitarian aid to besieged civilians and its attempts to politicize the humanitarian crisis to serve its goals.” The Coalition’s statement concluded by calling on the international community to realize that the humanitarian crisis in Syria will not be solved “unless a transition of power is achieved, which would constitutes the end of tyranny and paves the way for building a democratic and pluralistic state.” (Source: Syrian Coalition)
