The Syrian Negotiations Commission on Sunday met with representatives from countries concerned about Syria in Geneva. They engaged in discussions addressing crucial issues affecting the Syrian people, including the aftermath of the February 6 earthquake, the stalled political process, and various regional, international, and Arab initiatives aimed at finding a solution for Syria.
During the meeting, the Commission emphasized to the attending representatives the importance of achieving a genuine political transition, committing to the political process, and implementing UN Resolution 2254. Furthermore, they emphasized that Geneva, under the supervision of the United Nations, remains the appropriate venue for negotiations.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to positively responding to all initiatives seeking to implement UN resolutions, such as the Arab initiatives, the Quartet initiative, and the United Nations initiative. They underscored their objective of finding a just political solution for the Syrian people, emphasizing that any resolution must be based on UN Resolution 2254 and fall within the framework of UN legitimacy.
The Commission made it explicitly clear that the Syrian revolution and opposition forces are willing to actively participate in the political process in accordance with UN resolutions. They placed responsibility for obstructing progress on the Assad regime, which rejects all political solutions. Additionally, they expressed their desire for the return of refugees, combating terrorism, and addressing the issue of drugs in accordance with UN resolutions.
Badr Jamous, President of the Commission, expressed gratitude to Egypt and Qatar for their attendance at the meetings, as well as to the international partners, notably the United States, Türkiye, Canada, Britain, Switzerland, the European Union, France, the Netherlands, and Italy.
