President of the Syrian Negotiations Commission, Badr Jamous, provided an overview of the latest political developments in Syria during the 70th session of the General Authority of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), held at the office of the Syrian Interim Government in the Aleppo countryside on Saturday.
Jamous highlighted that regional and international conflicts have led to a significant decrease in international attention towards Syria. He emphasized that the Commission is working on a new strategy aimed at reinforcing the role of the revolutionary social base in negotiations, establishing new international relations and alliances, and endeavoring to enhance relations with key state actors in Syria. The goal is to cultivate allies and diminish adversaries in support of the Syrian people and their revolution.
Furthermore, Jamous stressed that ongoing communications with Arab countries persist to advocate for a just political resolution ensuring the implementation of UN resolutions. He emphasized that normalizing relations with the Assad regime without achieving political progress will not facilitate the reunification of Syria, return of refugees, or contribute to sustainable stability in Syria and the region.
“We are committed to maintaining the Syrian file on the United Nations agenda and demand the inclusion of the Syrian file in the Security Council, with the presence of the Negotiations Commission, to elucidate the reasons behind the political process stagnation and identify those responsible for this impasse,” Jamous added.
Jamous also pointed out the Assad regime’s concerted efforts to obstruct the political process in Syria by disregarding UN resolutions, notably UN Resolution 2254, evading engagement with the United Nations, and rejecting proposals put forth by the UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, to reactivate the political process.
